If you're looking for a laboratory role where you can utilize your skills to benefit the public, this could be the perfect role for you.
The Government Laboratory is a Public Analyst Laboratory - you'll perform chemical analysis and/or other testing of drinking water, food, environmental samples, as well as a variety of other materials, primarily to ensure they comply with legislative or other requirements, mostly concerned with protection of the public or the environment.
This is an interesting and challenging role, where you can apply your skills and knowledge to play a vital part in provision of a the services provided by the Government Laboratory in support of other parts of Government, including the Island's water authority, official food control and environmental protection teams, and private industry.
The Laboratory uses a wide range of analytical methodology, including both traditional wet chemistry and instrumental techniques such as ICP-MS, GC-MS, Ion Chromatography and HPLC.
Degree level knowledge of chemistry is required, whether gained formally as a qualification or through proven development in an appropriate professional role, plus experience in a working laboratory gaining expertise in a range of analysis.
What can this role offer me?
In this role your work can play a crucially important service to our customers, enabling them to carry out their work. You can experience real job satisfaction, knowing the customer is happy, people's or the environment's health is protected, or someone's problem has been solved.
You can also enjoy the fantastic variety this role offers "unlike many laboratories the scope of testing is not restricted to just one type of sample matrix, nor are staff restricted to particular analytical techniques, making for greater variability of work than often may be the case. This demands flexibility of staff, and a readiness to develop, strong positives for anyone wanting ongoing challenge.
The Government Laboratory is small, only 14 people in total, and the individual teams smaller still, so you will be working as part of a tightly knit group, in parallel with others doing the same thing.
If working flexibly is important to you, you'll be happy to know we operate a flexi-time system making it easier to reclaim any additional hours worked and to fit your other commitments around your work life.
