Job title - Junior Orthopaedic Research Fellowship
Job Description
Liverpool University Hospitals Foundation Trust

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Trauma & Orthopaedic team at the Liverpool University Hospitals. Internationally renowned as a crucible of Orthopaedics, Liverpool was the home of the pioneers of orthopaedics and trauma surgery, Hugh Owen-Thomas, Robert Jones and Thomas Porter McMurray. The successful candidate will join a team of Orthopaedic professionals who remain committed to that culture of innovation today.

In November 2019 the formal merger between The Royal Liverpool & Broadgreen University NHS Trust & Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust orthopaedic departments took place. The merged department of the Liverpool University Hospitals wishes to appoint 2 full time Junior Orthopaedic Research Fellowships posts commencing August 2020 to August 2021.

The fellowship post is a unique and exciting opportunity and is aimed at prospective candidates who have completed the Foundation programme and/or those who are preparing to apply for specialist training programmes. The aim is to provide a broad-based orthopaedic training at a level higher than Foundation with special focus on areas of interest that the appointee would wish to develop in their professional skills and profile to prepare themselves for and competitive to apply for specialty programmes.

This post will suit a bright, dedicated team player prepared to work hard to deliver care in our busy teaching hospitals. You will be rewarded for your hard work with abundant guidance to develop you, your skills and CV on your journey. We recognise that you are in demand and we are prepared to invest time and energy into your development.

The posts will be based predominantly at the Aintree University, our trauma site, and Broadgreen Hospital, our state of the art elective centre. The post will provide a protected day per week for research/educational activity. The unit is developing a vibrant research portfolio. You will utilise this protected time to engage in a range of research projects ongoing in the unit, with the benefit of senior academic support, and can expect to complete research and to prepare such research for presentation and publication. This may include making grant applications and organising ethical approval for future studies, experience of both of which will be invaluable in your future research career. Alternatively, you may be more interested in the educational opportunities which exist within the department, in collaboration with the University of Liverpool, which may include completing a funded Post-Graduate Certificate in Medical Education. The details of the non-clinical activity will be agreed on appointment.

For the remainder of the working week, your responsibilities will be clinical; day to day work will be varied including ward work, trauma and major trauma on call, outpatient clinics and theatre sessions. We have recently revised the job plans to allow for a team-based structure to provide greater continuity of training. We encourage trainees to operate under supportive supervision to develop their surgical skills. A number of the consultants are deeply involved in educational roles all the way from undergraduate level to registrar level and pride themselves on training the next generation of surgeons.

The unit is continually developing a vibrant and awarding research portfolio. Enthusiastic applicants will have plenty of opportunity to participate in
